Jungle Bird

The “Jungle Bird,” circa 1978 from the Kuala Lumpur Hilton’s Aviary Bar. Certainly one of the most idiosyncratic cocktails of the original Tiki generation–utilizing the potent Italian bitter aperitivo Campari–but, on reflection, a rather logical deduction. Campari being a kind of amalgamation of two popular Tiki ingredients: grapefruit and grenadine. Campari is a divisive flavour but once it gets into your bones it stays. This is drink has become a real go to for me whenever I step into a new Tiki bar.


3/4 oz Campari
1/2 oz lime juice
1/2 simple syrup
4 oz pineapple juice
1 1/2 oz dark Jamaican rum


  1. Combine ingredients in a shaker. Shake well with ice and strain into a glass filled with ice.
